Gouache Painting

  • Austin ArtWorks Center 300 Main St N Austin, MN, 55912 United States (map)

Why learn to paint with gouache? Gouache is the friendliest of paint mediums and can be an artist’s “gem” of preferred paints. It brings out the creativity and possibilities are endless! And with each successful art piece, another idea is around the corner ready to be created!

So what is gouache?

Gouache is like an opaque watercolor. Gouache has also been around for over ten centuries, far longer than acrylics, with records showing Ancient Egyptian paintings made from this medium. However, it is often considered a cross between acrylics and watercolors because it has the same consistency as watercolor paint and the high pigmentation and opacity of acrylics. It is well-known for this distinct quality - it can be reactivated and reworked several times with water. This is very forgiving for beginner painters trying to practice their blending skills. You can easily soften the painted area with a wet brush, add new colors, or lighten certain parts of your artwork for contrast.

This class is a 4 session series on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students will start out learning techniques of what gouache painting is like. From there, students will practice painting images and experimenting on their own. All supplies will be provided and your own pan of gouache paints can go home with you at the end of class.
