The Austin Area Commission for the Arts welcomes you to a performance by Jon Stowell & Part Time Ex's on Saturday, October 29th from 7:30-9:30pm at the Austin Artworks Center. Austin native Jon Stowell returns for his third performance in the 'Music at the Bank' concert series with a new band and new collection of rock and roll songs. "Part Time Ex's is a project inspired by songs and sounds from the time when rock and roll emerged from the commingling of blues, country, and folk music in the mid-twentieth century. The influences of earlier popular genres melded into early rock music and you hear those styles in this new batch of tunes," Stowell said. "Some songs are folky, some are bluesy, some sound like surf rock. It's a lot of fun."
A 1999 graduate from Austin High School, Stowell has been playing guitar and singing since childhood and has performed with numerous bands and projects across the globe. He led the popular St. Paul bluegrass band LOUDRAY from 2005-2010 and more recently partnered with Austin favorite James Bracken in the duo Bracken and Stowell. Speaking about his new project, Stowell says "Part Time Ex's is more electric than the recent groups, rarely do I brandish the electric guitar, but these songs demand it. We harness some great energy best delivered with dynamic drums and bass. It's raw and rambunctious. It's reckless like only rock and roll can be."
Filling out the new ensemble is Austin native and 2003 Austin High School alumnus Nick Tobar on lead guitar, Minneapolis percussionist Justin Fischler on drums, and a mixture of people filling in on bass and other guitar parts. "Part of the gimmick with the new name is that all of the players are busy and the supporting cast rotates in and out as schedules permit," Stowell says, continuing that "certainly some of the tunes are love songs about broken hearts, troubled romances, and the excitement new love brings." He laughs, "aren't most songs love songs?"
Jon Stowell & Part Time Ex's make their southern Minnesota debut! Stowell will perform a short solo acoustic set followed by a full band performance with Part Time Ex's. Stowell smiles, "I'm really proud of these new songs, there's something in each melody that feels familiar. It's comfortable and engaging, it's rollicking and raucous. Come find out for yourself."
